Le sedie in vetroresina sono rari esempi di una soddisfacente sintesi di innovazione formale e tecnica. Per la prima volta nella storia del design, Charles e Ray Eames hanno utilizzato la malleabilità della plastica per lo sviluppo di un comodo guscio di seduta che corrisponde alla forma del corpo umano. L'idea di realizzare un guscio stampato tridimensionale risale a un progetto del 1940. Il tentativo originale di realizzare il guscio in compensato non ebbe successo, tuttavia, a causa delle condizioni estreme necessarie per modellare il materiale. Solo con l'avvento della tecnologia della vetroresina è stato possibile ottenere risultati soddisfacenti. La prima sedia in vetroresina entrò in produzione nel 1950. Dopo anni di sperimentazione, Charles e Ray Eames furono in grado di realizzare il loro obiettivo: una sedia prodotta industrialmente che è economica, robusta e confortevole. Per motivi ecologici, tuttavia, la fibra di vetro era discutibilmente. Grazie ai recenti progressi nella tecnologia e nei materiali, oggi il DSW può essere prodotto esattamente nella stessa forma ma realizzato in polipropilene.
