Nei suoi progetti, Alvar Aalto ha combinato le tradizioni artigianali scandinave e la sua stessa affinità con la natura con le idee funzionali del Bauhaus. Ciò portò a uno scambio di idee con Marcel Breuer, che in seguito influenzò il lavoro di entrambi gli uomini. La poltrona n. 42 è stata presentata per la prima volta in una mostra organizzata in collaborazione con il Nordic Building Forum nel 1932. Con una semplice struttura in tre parti, il design garantisce un elevato livello di comfort: la base a sbalzo si flette in risposta alla risposta dell'utente il peso e la scocca del sedile in compensato seguono i contorni del corpo. In riconoscimento delle sue piacevoli qualità tattili e favorevoli proprietà isolanti, Aalto ha eseguito la sedia in legno di betulla naturale con una finitura laccata bianca o nera per la scocca del sedile.
